Matthew 28:19 & Baptism & the trinity doctrine

The KJV Scriptures and Observations

Mt28.18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All POWER is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
{The important fact that Jesus is telling His disciples in this verse is that He has received All POWER from His Father.}

Mt28.19 >Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
{This verse tells us that there is a God, there is a Son and there is a Holy Spirit. This verse does not say anything about their nature, nor the relationship that they hold to each other, it does not tell us that there are 3 entities or persons, nor that God is made up of three persons, it does not tell us who the Holy Spirit is, nor that these 3 persons make 1 God, [the word God in this verse is not even mentioned], nor is anything said about the Godhead. This verse says absolutely nothing about any co-equal, co-eternal, co-existent characteristics of these 3 persons or beings.
At Matthew 28:19 reference is made to “the name . . . of the Holy Ghost.” But the word “name” does not always mean a personal name, either in Greek or in English. When we say “in the name of the law,” we are not referring to a person. We mean that which the law stands for; its authority. Robertson’s Word Pictures in the New Testament says: “The use of name [onoma] here is a common one in the Septuagint and the papyri for power or authority.” So baptism ‘in the name of the Holy Spirit’ recognizes the authority of the spirit, that it is from God and functions by His divine will. This, His disciples understood, because they knew that God had given Jesus all authority; all power.}
What is the ONLY name under heaven whereby we can be saved?
Ac4.10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, [even] by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Ac4.12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is NONE OTHER NAME under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
We do NOT call on the name of the Father or Holy Spirit to be saved in baptism; only JESUS who died for our sins. Nothing else is able to met that criteria.
{We cannot prove this verse has been tampered with by the Catholic Church but what we do know is:
1) The Catholic Church confess to changing it. The Catholic Encyclopedia, II, page 263: “The baptismal formula was changed from the name of Jesus Christ to the words Father, Son, and Holy Spirit by the Catholic Church in the second century.”
2) Most theologians also agree that they did change it.
3) No one followed this supposed instruction and all were baptized in the name of Christ ONLY!
4) Other Scriptures say we are baptized and saved by calling on the name of the Lord ONLY.
5) Eusebius [c.260-339 AD] who saw the earliest manuscripts when he quoted this verse wrote that it said, “In His name”.
The weight of evidence is overwhelming that Matthew 28:19 was changed to the words Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

All the New Testament baptisms were carried out in the name of Jesus – ac2.38; ac8.12; ac8.16; ac10.48; ac16.15; ac18.8; ac19.5; ac22.16; ro6.3-4; 1co1.12-17; ga3.27; ep4.5 and 1p3.21. Question: Should the original Mt28.19 wording have been as we know it now, then why was every recorded apostle disobeying this commandment of Jesus? Answer: ???
1th5.21 PROVE ALL THINGS; hold fast that which is good.}
Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:13 stated: “Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?” The obvious answer to this rhetorical question is, “No. You were baptized in the name of Christ because HE was crucified for you.”Mk16.16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Ac22.16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and BE BAPTIZED, and wash away thy sins, calling on THE NAME OF THE LORD.
We do NOT call upon the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for there is no other name beside our Saviour for sin.
Ac4.12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is NONE OTHER NAME under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
For Seventh-Day Adventists: “I saw that God had especially guarded the Bible; yet when copies of it were few, learned men had in some instances changed the words, thinking that they were making it more plain, when in reality they were mystifying that which was plain, by causing it to lean to their established views, which were governed by tradition. But I saw that the Word of God, as a whole, is a perfect chain, one portion linking into and explaining another. True seekers for truth need not err; for not only is the Word of God plain and simple in declaring the way of life, but the Holy Spirit is given as a guide in understanding the way to life therein revealed.” — (E.G. White, Early Writings, 220.2, 1882).
Note: This text was given to us in 1882. Should God’s Word, the KJV Bible have been corrected by then, then this text would have been mere history for our [irrelevant] awareness only. No corrections were made between 1882 and the last, and 7th, KJV Bible update was made in 1900 by the Cambridge Press. Therefore, we should not be surprised to find out that God has permitted certain Bible verses to be altered. These alterations will deceive many – but not God’s very elect who, by diligent study of His Word, will be led to a knowledge of all truth. Note also that Prophecy is History told to us in advance.
Jesus was not telling His disciples about God; He was telling them to firstly teach and then baptize all nations through the power given to Him. This verse does not tell us how Jesus wanted us to teach; that had already been done:
God the Father being the only true God [jn17.3]; that He is Lord of heaven and earth [mt11.25] and that He is the God of Israel [jn4.21-22].
That He, is the Son of God, that God was His Father [jn10.36, jn5.18].
That He came out from God; that is He was the only begotten Son of God [jn17.8, jn3.16].
That His Sonship gave Him His divine inheritance [jn5.23, 26].
That His divine Sonship was recognised by His friends and enemies [mt16.16; mk5.7].
The Spirit is Life [jn6.63]; His very own life and breath [jn20.22].
I [Jesus] will not leave you Comfortless; I [Jesus] will come to you [jn14.18]. So when Christ spoke of His Spirit, He was speaking of His person; the divinity of His character.
This is what the disciples learnt from Jesus; they did not hear that God was 3 persons in 1 trinity; this is what you now hear about baptism in mt28.19.
Mt28.20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.
{ I = Jesus Christ, in person, through His Holy Spirit which is the Holy Spirit of God}.

Desciptions of the Holy Spirit of God

“Christ has given His Spirit as a divine power to overcome all hereditary and cultivated tendencies to evil, and to impress His own character upon His church.”
The Holy Spirit was the highest of all gifts that He could solicit from His Father for the exaltation of His people.”
“When he [the Spirit of truth] is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”
“The Holy Spirit was sent as the most priceless treasure man could receive.”
“He [Christ] determined to give His representative, the third person of the Godhead. This gift could not be excelled. He would give all gifts in one, and therefore the divine Spirit, converting, enlightening, sanctifying, would be His donation. {ST, December 1, 1898 par. 2}”
Dignitary = of high rank or office importance.
[Divine] Power = a supernatural being, deity, or force.
Mighty Power. “The prince of the power of evil can only be held in check by the power of God in the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit.
Mighty Agency.
Effective Helper.
Comforter – Holy Spirit = a provider of consolation.
A Regenerating Agent. “The Spirit was to be given as a regenerating agent, and without this the sacrifice of Christ would have been of no avail.”
An Endowment of [Physical and Mental] Power.
A Gift [the highest gift] from God the Father.
[Third Person of the Godhead – as previously stated.]
So the Holy Spirit of God is described in many ways; but never as a 3rd god nor as a 3rd individual person.
Christ said of the Spirit, “He shall glorify me.” As Christ glorified the Father by the demonstration of his love, so the Spirit was to glorify Christ by revealing to the world the riches of his grace. The very image of God is to be reproduced in humanity. The honor of God, the honor of Christ, is involved in the perfection of the character of his people. {RH, May 19, 1904 par. 4}
Note: If the Holy Spirit was a god, then he would not need to glorify Christ, nor His Father; as he himself would be glorified.

Spirit of Prophecy Supportive Quotations

The disciples were to carry their work forward in CHRIST’S NAME. Their every word and act was to fasten attention on HIS NAME, as possessing that vital power by which sinners may be saved. Their faith was to center IN HIM who is the source of mercy and power. In HIS NAME they were to present their petitions to the Father, and they would receive answer. They were to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. CHRIST’S NAME was to be their watchword, their badge of distinction, their bond of union, the authority for their course of action, and the source of their success. Nothing was to be recognized in HIS KINGDOM that did not bear HIS NAME and superscription. {AA 28.2}

CHRIST’S VISIBLE PRESENCE WAS ABOUT TO BE WITHDRAWN from the disciples, but a new ENDOWMENT OF POWER was to be theirs. THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS TO BE GIVEN THEM IN ITS FULLNESS, SEALING THEM FOR THEIR WORK. “Behold,” the Saviour said, “I send the promise of My Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” Luke 24:49. “For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.” “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:5, 8. {AA 30.2}

THE DISCIPLES did not ask for a blessing for themselves. They were weighted with the burden of souls. The gospel was to be carried to the ends of the earth, and they CLAIMED THE ENDOWMENT OF POWER THAT CHRIST HAD PROMISED. THEN IT WAS THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS POURED OUT, AND THOUSANDS WERE CONVERTED IN A DAY.–Southern Watchman, Aug. 1, 1905. {ChS 252.9}
CHRIST has promised the GIFT of the Holy Spirit to HIS CHURCH, and the promise belongs to us as much as to the first disciples. But like every other promise, it is given on conditions. There are many who believe and profess to claim the Lord’s promise; they talk about Christ and about the Holy Spirit, yet receive no benefit. They do not surrender the soul to be guided and controlled by the DIVINE AGENCIES. We cannot use the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is to use us. Through the Spirit God works in His people “to will and to do of His good pleasure.” But many will not submit to this. They want to manage themselves. This is why they do not receive the heavenly gift. Only to those who wait humbly upon God, who watch for His guidance and grace, is the Spirit given. The power of God awaits their demand and reception. This promised blessing, claimed by faith, brings all other blessings in its train. It is given according to the riches of the grace of Christ, and He is ready to supply every soul according to the capacity to receive.–The Desire of Ages, p. 672. {ChS 253.1}
The great outpouring of the Spirit of God, which lightens the whole earth with His glory, will not come until we have an enlightened people, that know by experience what it means to be laborers together with God. When we have entire, wholehearted consecration to the service of Christ, God will recognize the fact by an outpouring of His Spirit without measure; but this will not be while the LARGEST PORTION OF THE CHURCH ARE not LABORERS TOGETHER WITH GOD.–Review and Herald, July 21, 1896. {ChS 253.2}

The first disciples went forth preaching the word. They revealed Christ in their lives. And the Lord worked with them, “confirming the word with signs following.” Mark 16:20. These disciples prepared themselves for their work. Before the day of Pentecost they met together, and put away all differences. They were of one accord. They believed Christ’s promise that the blessing would be given, and they prayed in faith. They did not ask for a blessing for themselves merely; they were weighted with the burden for the salvation of souls. The gospel was to be carried to the uttermost parts of the earth, and they claimed the endowment of power that Christ had promised. THEN IT WAS THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS POURED OUT, AND THOUSANDS WERE CONVERTED IN A DAY. {DA 827.1} Also {RH, November 19, 1908 par. 13}
SO IT MAY BE NOW. Instead of man’s speculations, let the word of God be preached. Let Christians put away their dissensions, and give themselves to God for the saving of the lost. Let them in faith ask for the blessing, and it will come. The outpouring of the Spirit in apostolic days was the “former rain,” and glorious was the result. But the “latter rain” will be more abundant. Joel 2:23. {DA 827.2} Also {RH, November 19, 1908 par. 14}
All who consecrate soul, body, and spirit to God WILL BE CONSTANTLY RECEIVING A NEW ENDOWMENT OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL POWER. The inexhaustible supplies of heaven are at their command. Christ gives them the breath of His own spirit, the life of His own life. The Holy Spirit puts forth its highest energies to work in heart and mind. The grace of God enlarges and multiplies their faculties, and every perfection of the divine nature comes to their assistance in the work of saving souls. Through co-operation with CHRIST they are complete IN HIM, and in their human weakness they are enabled to do the deeds of Omnipotence. {DA 827.3} Also {RH, November 19, 1908 par. 15}

When one places his feet on the solid rock Christ Jesus as his foundation, he receives an ENDOWMENT OF POWER from the Source of all knowledge, all wisdom, and spiritual efficiency, that all may know to which party he belongs–commandment keepers or commandment breakers. The banner of Prince Emmanuel that floats over his head will not fail to clear away all uncertainty and give all to understand that we keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. The love of Jesus Christ possesses a constraining power. {TMK 214.3}
When Jesus was asked the question, Art thou the Son of God? He knew that to answer in the affirmative would make His death certain; a denial would leave a stain upon His humanity. There was a time to be silent, and a time to speak. He had not spoken until plainly interrogated. In His lessons to His disciples He had declared: “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.” When challenged, Jesus did not deny His relationship with God. IN THAT SOLEMN MOMENT HIS CHARACTER WAS AT STAKE AND MUST BE VINDICATED. He left on that occasion an example for man to follow under similar circumstances. He would teach him not to apostatize from his faith to escape suffering or even death. {TMK 214.4}
Note: The above paragraph and it’s application for God’s people today, those who chose to reflect Jesus in every way. When challenged upon the relationship of God the Father and His only begotten Son Jesus Christ and the need to worship only One God, they cannot keep quiet. When they speak they incur the wroth of mankind; when they keep silent, they incur the wroth of God.

In describing to His disciples the office work of the Holy Spirit, Jesus sought to inspire them with the joy and hope that inspired His own heart. He rejoiced because of the abundant help He had provided for His church. The Holy Spirit was the highest of all gifts that He could solicit from His Father for the exaltation of His people. The Spirit was to be given as a regenerating agent, and without this the sacrifice of Christ would have been of no avail. The power of evil had been strengthening for centuries, and the submission of men to this satanic captivity was amazing. Sin could be resisted and overcome only through the mighty agency of the Third Person of the Godhead, who would come with no modified energy, but in the fullness of divine power. It is the Spirit that makes effectual what has been wrought out by the world’s Redeemer. It is by the Spirit that the heart is made pure. Through the Spirit the believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Christ has given His Spirit as a divine power to overcome all hereditary and cultivated tendencies to evil, and to impress His own character upon His church. {DA 671.2}
Of the Spirit Jesus said, “He shall glorify Me.” The Saviour came to glorify the Father by the demonstration of His love; so the Spirit was to glorify Christ by revealing His grace to the world. The very image of God is to be reproduced in humanity. The honor of God, the honor of Christ, is involved in the perfection of the character of His people. {DA 671.3}

Just so long as the church is satisfied with small things will it fail of receiving the great things of God. Why do we not hunger and thirst after the gift of the Spirit, since this is the means by which we are to receive power? Talk of it, pray for it, preach concerning it. The Lord is more willing to give the Holy Spirit to us than parents are to give good gifts to their children. {RH, May 19, 1904 par. 11}
If our workers realized the responsibility resting upon them, would they enter the work without cherishing a deep sense of its sacredness? Should we not see the deep movings of the Spirit of God upon the men who present themselves for the ministry? For the baptism of the Holy Spirit, every worker should be offering his prayer to God. Companies should be gathered together to ask for special help, for heavenly wisdom, that they may know how to devise and execute. Especially should men pray that God will baptize his missionaries with the Holy Spirit. {RH, May 19, 1904 par. 12}

     “The message was given. And there should be no delay in repeating the message, for the signs of the times are fulfilling; the closing work must be done. A great work will be done in a short time. A message will soon be given by God’s appointment that will swell into a loud cry. Then Daniel will stand in his lot, to give his testimony.
     The attention of our churches must be aroused. We are standing upon the borders of the greatest event in the world’s history, and Satan must not have power over the people of God, causing them to sleep on. The papacy will appear in its power. All must now arouse and search the Scriptures, for God will make known to His faithful ones what shall be in the last time. The word of the Lord is to come to His people in power.
     The signs of the end are fast fulfilling. The time of trouble is very near us now. We are to be brought into strait places in a way in which we have not been brought heretofore. The time of trouble is near, and we are to awake to a realization of this. We are to be sure that our feet are in the narrow path. We need an experience that we have not yet had, that we may have the assurance that the God of all grace is a very present help in time of need. The time of trouble–trouble such as was not since there was a nation–is right upon us, and we are like the sleeping virgins. We are to awake and ask the Lord Jesus to place underneath us His everlasting arms, and carry us through the time of trial before us.
     Let us turn our attention away from unimportant things, and give ourselves to God. We scarcely dream of the destroying angels that already are permitted to bring disaster and destruction in their path. Shall my life be spared to act a part in the closing scenes of this earth’s history?
     How little we know of what is going on in heaven! What fearful indifference those on this earth show to eternal realities. Souls are unprepared for what is about to take place in our world; the warning must be given, The end of all things is at hand.
     Again I say to my ministering brethren in Battle Creek, Preach the Word. The last message of mercy is to be given to prepare a people to stand in these last days. Everything is to be shaken that can be shaken, that those things that cannot be shaken may remain.
     This is what has been presented to me–that we are asleep, and do not know the time of our visitation. But if we humble ourselves before God, and seek Him with the whole heart, He will be found of us.”  {21MR 437, 438 1906}

Now a few more Spirit of Prophecy texts related to Baptism

The new birth is a rare experience in this age of the world. This is the reason why there are so many perplexities in the churches. Many, so many, who assume the name of Christ are unsanctified and unholy. They have been baptized, but they were buried alive. Self did not die, and therefore they did not rise to newness of LIFE IN CHRIST (MS 148, 1897). {6BC 1075.7}

The old sinful life is dead; the new LIFE ENTERED INTO WITH CHRIST by the pledge of baptism. Practise the virtues of the Saviour’s character. Let His wisdom dwell in you richly in all wisdom; “teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” . . . The sins that were practised before conversion, are to be put off, with the old man. With the new man, CHRIST JESUS, are to be put on “kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.” {SD 300.3}

Note that there are Different forms of Baptism

Many of the Jews baptised by John for Repentance were later re-baptised in the name of Jesus for the Remission of Sins.
When a Christian came to accept Jesus then they were baptised in the name of Jesus for the Remission of Sins. Jesus was / is the Lamb of God and He alone takes away the sins of the world – because He has died on Calvary.
Paul speaks about the [later – more mature] baptism of the Holy Spirit. This led to the first Pentecost when they were of one accord. When we are of one accord, the Pentecost experience WILL be repeated. This HAS to happen before the second coming of Jesus and, like before, the Holy Spirit will work through God’s people.
As stated elsewhere:
The great outpouring of the Spirit of God, which lightens the whole earth with His glory, will not come until we have an enlightened people, that know by experience what it means to be laborers together with God. When we have entire, wholehearted consecration to the service of Christ, God will recognize the fact by an outpouring of His Spirit without measure; but this will not be while the LARGEST PORTION OF THE CHURCH ARE not LABORERS TOGETHER WITH GOD.–Review and Herald, July 21, 1896. {ChS 253.2}

Now a few NEGLECTED Bible texts – because they do not fit the trinity doctrine

And the Son of God declares concerning Himself: {PP 34.1 1890}
Pr8.22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
Pr8.23 I was set up FROM everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. {From, NOT THROUGHOUT}
Pr8.24 When [there were] no depths, I WAS BROUGHT FORTH; when [there were] no fountains abounding with water.
Pr8.25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills WAS I BROUGHT FORTH:
Pr8.26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
Pr8.27 When he prepared the heavens, I [was] there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
Pr8.28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
Pr8.29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
Pr8.30 Then I was by him, [as] one brought up [with him]: and I was daily [his] delight, rejoicing always before him;
Pr8.31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights [were] with the sons of men.

Jn8.42 Jesus said unto them, If GOD were your FATHER, ye would love me: for I PROCEEDED FORTH AND CAME FROM GOD; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. {Literally FROM GOD – like Jn16.27, 16.30 & 17.8 this is not limited just to God’s heavenly location.}
Jn8.43 Why do ye not understand my speech? [even] because ye cannot hear my word. {How true for those trinitarian believers who just switch off [cannot hear] and will not study.}

Jn5.26 For as the FATHER hath life in himself; so hath he GIVEN to the SON to have life in himself;

1co8.6 But to us [there is but] ONE GOD, THE FATHER, of whom [are] all things, and we in him; AND ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST, by whom [are] all things, and we by him. [de6.4; is42.8; ml2.10; mk12.29-30,32; jn17.3; ro3.30; 1co8.4; ep4.6; 1ti2.5; ja2.19]

Ep4.6 ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL, WHO [IS] ABOVE ALL, and through all, and in you all. [de6.4; is42.8; ml2.10; mk12.29-30,32; jn17.3; ro3.30; 1co8.4&6; 1ti2.5; ja2.19]

Ep4.11 And he gave some, APOSTLES; and some, PROPHETS; and some, EVANGELISTS; and some, PASTORS and TEACHERS;
Ep4.12 FOR THE PERFECTING OF THE SAINTS, for the work of the MINISTRY, for the edifying of the body of Christ: {MINISTRY = MIN-IS-TRY = The act of serving.}
Ep4.13 TILL we all come in the UNITY of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
Ep4.14 That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with EVERY WIND OF DOCTRINE, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Ep4.15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, [even] Christ:

Jn17.3 AND THIS IS LIFE ETERNAL, THAT THEY MIGHT KNOW THEE THE ONLY TRUE GOD, AND JESUS CHRIST, whom THOU hast sent. [de6.4; is42.8; ml2.10; mk12.29-30,32; ro3.30; 1co8.4&6; ep4.6; 1ti2.5; ja2.19]

Re22.1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of THE THRONE OF GOD AND OF THE LAMB. {NB: TWO Divine Beings sit on a combined throne. GOD, who is THE FATHER, and His Only Begotten Son, JESUS CHRIST. TWO Divine Beings have a kingdom [See v.3 & Ep5.5].}

Re22.3 And there shall be no more curse: but THE THRONE OF GOD AND OF THE LAMB shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

Jn1.18 No man hath seen God at any time; THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, which is in the BOSOM OF THE FATHER, he hath declared [him]. {So Jesus came from the bosom of His Father}

Jn3.16 >For GOD so loved the world, that he GAVE his ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. {Note: God did not send His Son to be begotten. God sent His Only Begotten Son. God already had an Only begotten Son; and in His Love to restore fallen man, this is what God gave. How did He give? The Eternal Father, the unchangeable one, gave his only begotten Son, TORE FROM HIS BOSOM Him who was made in the express image of his person, and sent him down to earth to reveal how greatly he loved mankind. ….. {Review & Herald, July 9, 1895 par. 13} }.

So how could Jesus have been Co-equal, Co-eternal, Co-existent with God His Father. Always a father exists before a son exists.

A few more Spirit of Prophecy texts to dwell up in our Christian walk with Jesus

But now here was our Saviour, as it were, dying on the field of battle, AND HIS DISCIPLES [WERE] ASLEEP. How I have felt when I have thought of these things! He staggered, with the bloody sweat coming from His pores, moistening the sod of Gethsemane; and there was the cup of sufferings presented to Him; and He went to see where His disciples were, and they were asleep. ARE WE ASLEEP? He staggered back again, and began to pray for them, and here it was that the mysterious cup trembled in His hand. Should He drink of that cup, that cup of sufferings? “If it be possible,” He said, “let this cup pass from Me.” A strong angel was sent from heaven to strengthen Him. What if He had let that cup of sufferings alone? WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOST. He drank that cup for us, and we want to understand it. We want to sense what He has suffered in our behalf. He did not draw back from any representation of sufferings. {Ms78-1910}

Come, O my soul, to Calvary.
Mark the humble life of the Son of God. He was “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.” Behold His ignominy, His agony in Gethsemane, and learn what self-denial is. Are we suffering want? so was Christ, the Majesty of heaven. But His poverty was for our sakes. Are we ranked among the rich? so was He. But He consented for our sakes to become poor, that we through His poverty might be made rich. In Christ we have self-denial exemplified. His sacrifice consisted not merely in leaving the royal courts of heaven, in being tried by wicked men as a criminal and pronounced guilty, and in being delivered up to die as a malefactor, but in bearing the weight of the sins of the world. The life of Christ rebukes our indifference and coldness. We are near the close of time, when Satan has come down, having great wrath, knowing that his time is short. He is working with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish. THE WARFARE HAS BEEN LEFT IN OUR HANDS BY OUR GREAT LEADER FOR US TO CARRY FORWARD WITH VIGOR. WE ARE NOT DOING A TWENTIETH PART OF WHAT WE MIGHT DO IF WE WERE AWAKE. The work is retarded by love of ease and a lack of the self-denying spirit of which our Saviour has given us an example in His life. {3T 407.1 1872-1875} Also see {RH, December 15, 1874 par. 32}

GOD CALLS FOR COMPLETE CONSECRATION, and anything short of this He will NOT accept. A love for spiritual things should be encouraged, yea, must be encouraged, if we would grow in grace. Desires for goodness and true holiness are right so far as they go, but if we stop here, they will avail NOTHING. Good purposes are right, but they will prove of no avail UNLESS RESOLUTELY CARRIED OUT. Many professed Christians have no sense of the spiritual strength they might obtain were they as ambitious, zealous, and persevering to gain a knowledge of divine things as they are to obtain the perishable things of this life. Many are satisfied to be spiritual dwarfs. They have no disposition to make it their object to seek FIRST the kingdom of God and His righteousness; hence godliness is a hidden mystery to them; they can not understand it. They know not Christ by EXPERIMENTAL KNOWLEDGE. {ST, February 1, 1899 par. 13}
Were justice extinct, and were it possible for divine mercy to open the gates to the whole race, irrespective of character, there would be a worse condition of disaffection and rebellion in heaven than before Satan was expelled. The peace, happiness, and harmony of heaven would be broken. The change from earth to heaven will not change men’s character; the happiness of the redeemed in heaven results from the character formed in this life AFTER the image of Christ. The saints in heaven will first have been saints on earth. {Mar 326.5 1976}

Many will be lost while hoping and desiring to be Christians. They made no earnest effort, and therefore they will be weighed in the balance and found wanting. The will MUST be exercised in the right direction. We MUST say, I WILL be a Christian. I WILL know the length and breadth, the height and depth, of perfect love. Listen to the words of Jesus: “Blessed are they which do HUNGER AND THIRST AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS; for they shall be filled.” Ample provision has been made by Christ to satisfy the soul that hungers and thirsts for righteousness. Mrs. E. G. White. {ST, February 1, 1899 par. 14}

Some men have insight into matters, having ability to counsel. It is a gift of God. In moments when the cause of God is in need of words, sound and solemn and solid, they can speak words which will lead minds perplexed and in darkness, to see as a quick flash of sunlight the course for them to pursue, which [question] has filled them with perplexity and baffled their minds in study for weeks and months. There is an unraveling, a clearing up of the path before them, and the Lord has let His sunlight in, and they see their prayers are answered, their way is made clear. But some rash advice may be given–only get out of Battle Creek, notwithstanding there is nothing clearly defined as to what improvement they will make in spiritual advancement for themselves or others in doing this. {CL 25.5 1946} Also {2SM 361.4}

The cause needs the help of the old hands, the aged workers, who have had years of experience in the cause of God; who have watched the development and the progress of the message in its various lines; who have seen many go into fanaticism, cherishing the delusion of false theories, resisting all the efforts made to let the light of truth reveal the superstitions that were coming in to confuse minds and to make of none effect the message which in these last days must be given in its purity to God’s remnant people. {7T 286.3} 1902

Thinking, Praying Men.–Those who bear responsibilities must be men trained for the work, men whom God can teach and whom He can honor with wisdom and understanding, as He did Daniel. They must be thinking men, men who bear God’s impress and who are steadily progressing in holiness, in moral dignity, and in an understanding of their work. They must be praying men, men who will come up into the mount and view the glory of God and the dignity of the heavenly beings whom He has ordained to have charge of His work. Then, like Moses, they will follow the pattern given them in the mount; and they will be on the alert to secure and bring into connection with the work the very best talent that can be obtained. If they are growing men, possessing sanctified intelligence; if they listen to the voice of God and seek to catch every ray of light from heaven, they will, like the sun, pursue an undeviating course, and they will grow in wisdom and in favor with God. {The Publishing Ministry 64.1}

Between the laws of men and the precepts of Jehovah will come the last great conflict of the controversy between truth and error. Upon this battle we are now entering–a battle not between rival churches contending for the supremacy, but between the religion of the Bible and the religions of fable and tradition. The agencies which have united against truth are now actively at work. God’s Holy Word, which has been handed down to us at so great a cost of suffering and bloodshed, is little valued. There are few who really accept it as the rule of life. Infidelity prevails to an alarming extent, not in the world only, but in the church. Many have come to deny doctrines which are the very pillars of the Christian faith. The great facts of creation as presented by the inspired writers, the fall of man, the atonement, the perpetuity of the law–these all are practically rejected by a large share of the professedly Christian world. Thousands who pride themselves on their knowledge regard it as an evidence of weakness to place implicit confidence in the Bible, and a proof of learning to cavil at the Scriptures and to spiritualize and explain away their most important truths. {PK 625.2}
Christians should be preparing for what is soon to break upon the world as an OVERWHELMING SURPRISE, and this preparation they should make by diligently studying the word of God and striving to conform their lives to its precepts. The tremendous issues of eternity demand of us something besides an imaginary religion, a religion of words and forms, where truth is kept in the outer court. God calls for a revival and a reformation. The words of the Bible and the Bible alone, should be heard from the pulpit. But the Bible has been robbed of its power, and the result is seen in a lowering of the tone of spiritual life. In many sermons of today there is not that divine manifestation which awakens the conscience and brings life to the soul. The hearers cannot say, “Did not our heart burn within us, while He talked with us by the way, and while He opened to us the Scriptures?” Luke 24:32. There are many who are crying out for the living God, longing for the divine presence. Let the word of God speak to the heart. Let those who have heard only tradition and human theories and maxims, hear the voice of Him who can renew the soul unto eternal life. {PK 626.1}
Great light shone forth from patriarchs and prophets. Glorious things were spoken of Zion, the City of God. Thus the Lord designs that the light shall shine forth through His followers today. If the saints of the Old Testament bore so bright a testimony of loyalty, should not those upon whom is shining the accumulated light of centuries, bear a still more signal witness to the power of truth? The glory of the prophecies sheds their light upon our pathway. Type has met antitype in the death of God’s Son. Christ has risen from the dead, proclaiming over the rent sepulcher, “I am the resurrection, and the life.” John 11:25. He has sent His Spirit into the world to bring all things to our remembrance. By a miracle of power He has preserved His written word through the ages. {PK 626.2}
The Reformers whose protest has given us the name of Protestant, felt that God had called them to give the light of the gospel to the world; and in the effort to do this they were ready to sacrifice their possessions, their liberty, even life itself. In the face of persecution and death the gospel was proclaimed far and near. The word of God was carried to the people; and all classes, high and low, rich and poor, learned and ignorant, eagerly studied it for themselves. Are we, in this last conflict of the great controversy, as faithful to our trust as the early Reformers were to theirs? {PK 627.1}

Those who, standing in the front of the conflict, are impelled by the Spirit of God to do a special work, will frequently feel a reaction when the pressure is removed. Despondency may shake the most heroic faith, and weaken the most steadfast will. But God understands, and he still pities and loves his servants. He reads the motives and the purposes of the heart. To wait patiently, to trust when everything looks dark, is the lesson that every leader in God’s work needs to learn. Heaven will not fail them in their day of adversity. Nothing is apparently more helpless yet really more invincible than the soul that feels its nothingness and relies wholly on God. {RH, October 30, 1913 par. 10}

As the light and life of men was rejected by the ecclesiastical authorities in the days of Christ, so it has been rejected in every succeeding generation. Again and again the history of Christ’s withdrawal from Judea has been repeated. WHEN THE REFORMERS PREACHED THE WORD OF GOD, THEY HAD NO THOUGHT OF SEPARATING THEMSELVES FROM THE ESTABLISHED CHURCH; but the religious leaders would not tolerate the light, and those that bore it were FORCED TO SEEK ANOTHER CLASS, who were longing for the truth. IN OUR DAY few of the professed followers of the Reformers are actuated by their spirit. FEW ARE LISTENING FOR THE VOICE OF GOD, AND READY TO ACCEPT TRUTH IN WHATEVER GUISE IT MAY BE PRESENTED. OFTEN THOSE WHO FOLLOW IN THE STEPS OF THE REFORMERS ARE FORCED TO TURN AWAY FROM THE CHURCHES THEY LOVE, IN ORDER TO DECLARE THE PLAIN TEACHING OF THE WORD OF GOD. And many times those who are seeking for light are by the same teaching obliged to leave the church of their fathers, THAT THEY MAY RENDER OBEDIENCE. [DA 232.1]

The followers of Jesus need not be amazed if they are made partakers of His sufferings. Their motives will be questioned, and they will meet with disappointments on every hand; but Christ endured all this. How can He look upon those for whom He has paid so infinite a price and “be satisfied,” when they have never appreciated His great gift to them? “Consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest ye be wearied, and faint in your minds.” {20MR 137.2}

True Christians will have an experience like that of Christ in the wilderness of temptation, especially those who engage in rescuing souls from the snares of Satan. They will meet the assaults of the enemy of all righteousness; and as Christ overcame, so may they overcome through His grace. No one should feel that he is abandoned of God because he is subjected to sore temptations. If he remains unshaken by the temptations, Satan will leave him, and angels will minister to him as they did to Jesus. There is no comfort equal to that which Christians enjoy when the tempted soul has patiently suffered and Satan has been vanquished. They have borne witness for Jesus, RELYING WHOLLY UPON THE WORD OF GOD, “It is written,” and thus have resisted every advance of Satan, till they have beaten him back and gained the victory. {20MR 138.1 1993}

“If ye continue in my word, then ye are my disciples indeed, and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Jesus is truth. The Word is truth. The Law is truth.
Together they form TOTAL TRUTH
.
Get rid of one and you have partial truth.

Finally, what other Scripture has been altered ? 1John 5:7-8. God willing, this will be covered as a separate web-page topic.
